Winery owners, Carl and Marilynn Thoma of Chicago, Illinois requested that their new tasting room share the same sensibilities as graphic collateral materials for their boutique wine label. Artisanal wines are labeled in an Art Nouveau graphic sensibility.

The color palette of the winery’s collateral materials reflects the lush natural environment of the Pacific Northwest landscape.

Elements utilized in the completed interior which are derived from these materials include a hand stenciled pattern on the barrel vaulted ceiling, a custom designed armillary fixture and hand blown glass diffusers for the remaining pendant fixtures throughout. Custom rugs allude to a colorful map of the winery grounds. Fonts from the graphics were incorporated into the interior signage.

Modern furnishings with hints of the label’s Art Nouveau character were selected or custom made. Commissioned local artists depict plein – aire scenes of the hillside, interpretive themes of wind and movement as well as abstract pieces exhibiting Art Nouveau sensibilities comprise a curated artwork collection on display throughout the tasting room.

The completed tasting room hosts private winemaker dinners, wine club functions and is open to the public in addition to private groups by appointment. It comprises fifteen hundred square feet and was completed for seven hundred thousand dollars.

USA Today’s Readers Choice Awards recently included Van Duzer Vineyards on their Nationwide Top Ten Tasting Rooms list. The winery is one of only two located in Oregon that are a part of this list.
